The RECONMATIC partners are excited to announce one more Open Day, focused on automated solutions for sustainable and circular management of construction and demolition waste (CDW). This time the event will occur on August 21, 2024, in Shaoxin, aiming to bridge the European research conducted in the field with the advancements in China.
It will bring together industry and researchers from China, Europe, and the UK to share knowledge and the latest technical advancements. It will feature three sessions focusing on design & construction, demolition & offsite treatment, and innovative materials & circularity assessment. Simultaneous interpretation will be available.
The event will be hybrid and is generously sponsored by Invest Northern Ireland. Presentations and recordings will be publicly available after the event. To attend online registration is required. Please note that due to the limited capacity for physical attendance, that will be possible only by invitation. Contact us if you are interested in attending.

Situation of CDW in China
As of 2020, China has accumulated approximately 20 billion tonnes of construction waste, with an annual increase exceeding 2 billion tonnes. This waste represents around 40% of all urban solid waste, yet the recycling rate is still under 10%. The extensive volume of construction waste not only consumes vast tracts of land but also poses serious environmental hazards. Despite these challenges, the high costs associated with recycling and processing have slowed market development, leaving many recycling firms struggling. Addressing the reduction of construction waste emissions remains a critical issue in China. In recent years, China has achieved significant technological advances in recycling construction waste into aggregate and improving crushing and screening processes. There are currently about 200 projects with the capacity to process up to 1 million tonnes, engaging thousands of companies. There is substantial potential for expansion in the waste reuse and recycling sectors, and the RECONMATIC project aims to contribute to providing solutions that can be applicable worldwide to support that. Bridging research between Europe and China
The RECONMATIC project consortium consists of 23 elite partners from seven countries, including five EU member states, China, and the UK. The partners are leaders in fields ranging from construction (design, construction, refurbishment, and demolition) to waste treatment services, digital technology, robotics, and research & innovation. Together, they address the entire value chain to forge innovative solutions for the complete lifecycle management of construction waste, enhance the value of derived materials, foster technological synergies, and accomplish strategic objectives in waste reduction and circular construction within the China-European markets.
The Open Day, co-hosted by Arcas & Callisto and the RECONMATIC China team (CACE) of 10 organisations including industry associations, universities, research institutions, and software developers, showcases their extensive capabilities. The China team and operates key national laboratories focused on utilising solid waste resources and developing energy-saving and green building materials and recently joined the World Circular Economy Forum to discuss China's role in Global sustainability. They have led several national and international projects, including studies on integrated solutions for industrial solid waste treatment systems and equipment. The team has also set more than ten national and industry standards in solid waste treatment and utilization, such as 'Recycled Fine Aggregates for Concrete and Mortar'.
The Venue
Venue: Veegle by Landison Hotel Shaoxing
Address: Building 2, Area C1, Shaoxing World Exhibition & Convention Center, No.7, Yuhui Road, Qixian Street, Keqiao District, Shaoxing City.
Near the Shaoxing North Railway Station, the hotel is about a 10-minute drive away.
In 2019, Shaoxing was among the first cities in China to pilot the "Zero Waste City" initiative, and it was the sole pilot city in Zhejiang Province at that time. Shaoxing hosts several waste management companies and is home to a provincial key laboratory dedicated to solid waste treatment and resource recycling. The city has extensively developed a circular ecological industrial park, and by 2021, Zhejiang Province, where Shaoxing is located, became the first in China to achieve zero growth in total domestic waste and zero landfill waste disposal.
Visiting activities to the CDWM sites are planned to follow the Open Day in Shaoxing. Stay tuned with the project news and social media for updates!

Zhejiang Runsheng New Energy Demonstration Base
Zhejiang Runsheng New Energy Co., Ltd. specialises in developing biomass clean energy technologies, manufacturing biomass pyrolysis equipment, and operating urban solid waste recycling projects, has a 250,000-square-meter R&D and production base. Their self-developed medium and high-temperature biomass pyrolysis technology converts urban waste like wood chips and construction waste into high-energy biomass gas, industrial steam, and biochar.
The demonstration base is located in the Keqiao District of Shaoxing City. It includes fully automated sorting and crushing systems for construction waste, along with automated brick-making production lines. Each year, the base processes 500,000 tonnes of construction waste and 150,000 tonnes of biomass. This results in the production of recycled aggregates, eco-bricks, biochar, and industrial steam, leading to a resource utilization rate of over 95%.
